Sponsored by the University of Maine Extension and the University<br \/>\nof New Hampshire, the pasture walk will feature presentations by Dr. Rachel<br \/>\nGilker from the Vermont Pasture Network and Pasture Program at the University<br \/>\nof Vermont Center for Sustainable Agriculture. Rachel will discuss estimating dry<br \/>\nmatter yields and intakes in pastures and general grazing management, as well as<br \/>\nideas around direct marketing of milk products. Measuring pasture intakes and<br \/>\nmonitoring dairy cow diets are important parts of recordkeeping on organic dairy<br \/>\nfarms.<\/p>\n<p>Heather and Doug Donahue have been at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.balfourfarmdairy.com\/\">Balfour Farm in Pittsfield<\/a> for two years,<br \/>\nand quickly established their dairy. Originally shipping organic milk to a wholesale<br \/>\nmarket, they now direct market all their milk through a variety of farm products<br \/>\nthey produce on the farm.  Heather will be<br \/>\ndiscussing the rules and regulations process of selling dairy products and Dr. Gary<br \/>\nAnderson from the University of Maine will be on hand to talk about testing services<br \/>\nand learning opportunities for processors available through the University of Maine.<br \/>\nAdditionally, the Donahue family is participating in a recently funded Organic<br \/>\nResearch and Extension Initiative (OREI) project entitled \u201cAssisting Organic<br \/>\nProducers to Meet the Demands of New and Emerging Milk Markets\u201d. Dr. Andre<br \/>\nBrito from the University of New Hampshire will speak briefly about the project<br \/>\nand some of the goals we hope to achieve through the research. Amy Beliveau, a<br \/>\nrecently graduated MS student from the University of New Hampshire, will present<br \/>\nher thesis work comparing the concentration of carotenes (precursors of Vit. A) in<br \/>\ncheese made from organic vs. conventional Jersey cows.<\/p>\n<p>Lunch will be served to those participants who register before the event.
