Maine Cheese Guild

Meeting: Ag Trade Show Tuesday Jan 13

We held our January meeting at the Maine Agricultural Trade Show at the Augusta Civic Center on Tuesday, January 13th at 10am. There was a nice turn-out along with some fresh faces. Representatives from the Department of Ag were present to help answer licensing and inspection questions. There was a long discussion about membership benefits and outreach to members and non-members (especially licensed cheese making non-members). We also learned that Farms for Maine’s Future has decided to re-submit legislation allowing the sale of unlicensed dairy products during this legislative session. We decided to discuss this in-depth during our February meeting at Pineland Farms Creamery.

Meeting: Guild Holiday Party on Sunday, December 14

We had a wonderful Holiday Party hosted by Balfour Farms. We had eight different ricottas to taste of all different kinds of milk and methods — whey only, skim milk, whole milk. It was especially interesting to see the textural differences. It was great to see everyone who attended, and thank you to all the cheese makers who participated in the ricotta tasting.

Meeting: Nov 10 Annual Meeting in Rockport

Our Guild Annual Meeting was on Monday, November 10th beginning at 10am at the State of Maine Cheese Co. on Route 1 in Rockport.

Among the general business and future planning for 2015 and beyond that we discussed, we elected four board members:

  • Jessie Dowling
  • Jean Koons
  • Anne Bossi
  • Mary Belding

and elected a new Treasurer — Mary Belding. Thank you to all the members who have volunteered to help run the Guild, and thanks especially to the years of work that Mark Whitney put in as Treasurer, going back to the founding of the Guild in 2003.
