Family Fun to Be Had at Maine Farms This Spring – Yes, We’re Kidding!

MAINE: With spring in full swing, farms and creameries across Maine are bustling with activity — new lambs, calves, and goat kids are arriving and a delightful array of cheeses, yogurts, and other creamery specialties are available for sampling. Now is the perfect time to grab your masks and perhaps a baguette, pack the kids into the car (your kids, not goats), and explore some of the best dairy products in Maine while basking in the glorious spring sunshine.

Not sure where to go for local dairy delights and family fun? We have a map of creameries and dairy farms , many open to the public. Check the map for farm links where you can learn more about what each i offering. Farms have different business hours and projected arrival times for the baby animals, and some require pre-registration for Covid safety, there is no doubt that there is plenty of dairy deliciousness to explore in our great state. A few creameries to consider for your next day trip:

Fuzzy Udder, Whiefield
Widdershins, Dover Foxcroft
Sunflower Farm and Creamery, Cumberland
Smiling Hill, Westbrook
Balfour Farm, Pittsfield
Appleton Creamery, Appleton

The Maine Cheese Guild wants you to love cheese and the Mainers and animals who produce it. Their mission is to support and encourage the Maine cheesemaking community, educate cheesemakers and consumers, and share the joy and art of regional cheeses. An incredible resource for cheese-lovers everywhere, the Guild offers classes, product information, and organizes community events such as the Maine Cheese Festival and the Maine Open Creamery Day. For there is much joy to be had, and much cheese to enjoy!

There is an opportunity to learn more about The Maine Cheese Guild at our next membership meeting at the end of May. With CDC guidelines allowing for larger group gatherings with social distancing, this will be an in-person event at Sunflower Farm and Creamery in Cumberland complete with goat yoga (free for members, $10 for general public) and a BYOCheese picnic!
