Maine's 2011 Dairy Princesses at the Ag Trade Show Commissioner's Luncheon

Our January meeting took place on the first day of the Maine Agricultural Trade Show, first thing in the morning. The Guild discussed upcoming workshops (stay tuned for announcements right here about April and/or May workshop dates), organizing around the 2011 ACS Conference in Montreal, reducing red tape as a priority of State Government with the new executive and legislative branches, and novel ways to partner with retailers. Hal Prince and Cathie Cotton were there from the Dept. of Quality Assurance, and they filled us in on the changes that have been going on in their departments, as well as what may not be changing.

Bob Smith, Edible RindsCome join us in a commemoration for Bob Smith, Edible Rinds cheesemaker, chef, Maine Cheese Guild member, and dear friend… at the Coastal House ( www.thecoastalhouse.com/directions.html) in Wells, Maine on January 30, 2011 from 1-5 pm.   Let’s create a Maine cheese plate!  Bring your contributions to Wells or to the Guild meeting on Tuesday at the Maine Ag Trade Show in Augusta.

Bob Smith, Edible Rind

Sadly an enthusiastic cheesemaker and MCG member, Bob Smith of The Edible Rind, passed away unexpectedly from a massive heart attack. From what I heard from the foodies in Portland on Friday (the kitchen crew at Fore Street, ditto Aurora Provisions and the Rosemont staff) he tried to call for help but it took EMT 15 minutes to arrive – too late to save Bob who apparently suffered from untreated high blood pressure. An Obit appeared in the Portland Herald on Tuesday. This is a shock – a loss of one of our own. The Edible Rind is closed for business. Terribly sad – such a sweet guy and wonderful cheesemaker.
